TL;DR: The Reserve Bank of India's Report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India 2024-25 (December 29, 2025) lists 23,879 bank frauds of ₹1 lakh and above, with ₹34,771 crore involved, reported in 2024-25. Card and internet frauds were 13,469 cases (56%) but only ₹520 crore (1.5%), while loan 'advances' frauds were 7,934 cases (33%) but ₹31,911 crore (92%). Amounts are 'involved', not actual loss.
Bank frauds reported by year
This is the RBI's table of frauds of ₹1 lakh and above that banks reported, classified by area of operation and counted by the date they were reported, not when they happened. The amounts are the sums involved as reported, not what customers actually lost, and banks revise them.
| Financial year | Frauds reported | Amount involved |
|---|---|---|
| 2020-21 | 7,135 | ₹1,04,111 crore |
| 2021-22 | 8,941 | ₹36,617 crore |
| 2022-23 | 13,462 | ₹16,502 crore |
| 2023-24 | 36,052 | ₹11,261 crore |
| 2024-25 | 23,879 | ₹34,771 crore |
| Apr-Sep 2025 | 5,092 | ₹21,515 crore |
The last row covers only April to September 2025 and should not be compared with a full year.
The amount fell from ₹1,04,111 crore in 2020-21 to ₹11,261 crore in 2023-24, then rose to ₹34,771 crore in 2024-25. The RBI notes that the 2024-25 data include 122 frauds worth ₹18,336 crore that relate to earlier years and were classified as frauds that year. Case counts follow a different path: they peaked at 36,052 in 2023-24, driven by card and internet frauds (29,080 that year).
Two different pictures: cases and money
In 2024-25, card and internet frauds were the most frequent category, with 13,469 cases (56.4% of 23,879) but only ₹520 crore (1.5% of ₹34,771 crore). Advances (loans) were 7,934 cases (33.2%) yet ₹31,911 crore (91.8%). Card and internet frauds in this table average about ₹3.9 lakh each (our calculation), because the table only counts frauds of ₹1 lakh and above. One caveat on the 92%: ₹18,336 crore (52.7% of the 2024-25 total) is 122 older frauds classified that year, and the table does not give their category, so the advances share and the sense that a few large loan frauds dominate are partly an artefact of that reclassification. (Percentages are our calculations.)
| Financial year | Card/internet cases | Card/internet amount | Advances cases | Advances amount |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020-21 | 2,545 | ₹119 crore | 3,276 | ₹1,02,759 crore |
| 2021-22 | 3,596 | ₹155 crore | 3,677 | ₹34,532 crore |
| 2022-23 | 6,699 | ₹277 crore | 3,989 | ₹15,065 crore |
| 2023-24 | 29,080 | ₹1,457 crore | 4,113 | ₹9,160 crore |
| 2024-25 | 13,469 | ₹520 crore | 7,934 | ₹31,911 crore |

What is not in this data
These are bank-reported frauds of ₹1 lakh and above, so small card and UPI frauds are outside the table. UPI fraud has its own official figures, covered in India's 1930 helpline and UPI fraud data. The RBI Annual Report 2025-26 (May 2026) gives full-year 2025-26 figures; the report could not be opened in full from our systems, so we do not use secondary summaries of it here. The table's footnote also records that 942 frauds worth ₹1,28,031 crore were withdrawn after the Supreme Court judgment of 27 March 2023.
How we compiled this data
All figures are from RBI Report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India 2024-25, Appendix Table IV.7, "Frauds in Various Banking Operations Based on Date of Reporting" (December 29, 2025). Totals and all eleven category rows were checked against the table; category columns reconcile to totals, with a rounding gap of ₹1 crore in 2021-22 only. Percentage shares are our arithmetic.
Frauds are counted by date of reporting, so a fraud reported in 2024-25 may have happened years earlier. Amounts are the amount involved as reported by banks, which is not the same as customer loss. We did not combine this series with figures from other releases, which use a different basis.
