Report to both bank and Police

Under the new bank Code, to be considered for reimbursement you must report to your bank and Police within 3 months of discovering the scam (details). So don’t skip the Police report, even if it feels pointless.

Don’t be embarrassed

Police note scams aren’t always obvious and work by building urgency or trust. One recent Bay of Plenty case: a vulnerable person was manipulated into withdrawing cash and handing it over; two men were charged. Reports are how cases like that get solved.

After reporting

A free exposure check shows if your details are in breach data.
