TL;DR: Start at peoplefinders.com/opt-out, use the “Right to Opt-out” section, confirm the email from support@peoplefinders.com within 24 hours, and complete the Record Suppression Form. PeopleFinders only accepts opt-outs from residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws (including California, Texas, Virginia, New Jersey and others). Everyone else gets a rejection, but there are workarounds: Californians can use the state’s free DROP platform, and FastPeopleSearch’s removal reportedly clears PeopleFinders too.
The catch
Most people-search sites remove anyone who asks. PeopleFinders, according to Redact’s guide, only honours opt-outs from residents of states with comprehensive privacy laws. The list it gives: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia.
Live in Florida, New York or Illinois? You may get a polite no. Privacy in the US still depends on your postcode, sorry, ZIP code. See our state privacy law guide.
Step by step
- Go to peoplefinders.com/opt-out (the “Do Not Sell My Personal Information” page). In the Right to Opt-out section click Next and fill in the basic fields.
- Open the email from support@peoplefinders.com, “Complete your peoplefinders.com Privacy Request”, and click the link within 24 hours.
- Fill in the Record Suppression Form: first name, last name and street address are required; email, phone, date of birth and middle name help matching. Avoid special characters.
- Wait for an acceptance or rejection email.
Removal is claimed within three days if accepted, per Redact. Check in a private window after 72 hours; if you’re still listed at day seven despite an acceptance, start again.
California residents: use DROP as well
California’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) at consumer.drop.privacy.ca.gov sends one deletion request to every data broker registered with the state. The EFF explains that it launched on 1 January 2026, that registered brokers had to start processing requests from 1 August 2026, and that one request reached 614 registered brokers when it wrote. Registered brokers must check DROP at least every 45 days, and the state’s DROP page says status updates can take up to 90 days to appear.
Peoplefinders, LLC appears in California’s data broker registry (a snapshot from August 2026 compiled by Offlist lists peoplefinders.com), so a DROP request should reach it. Keep your DROP ID to track the request, and still check PeopleFinders directly after 90 days. DROP generally doesn’t delete public records such as property ownership. Our DROP guide walks through it.
If you’re rejected
- Appeal through the “Your Privacy Rights” section of PeopleFinders’ privacy notice, naming the law you think applies, or call (800) 718-8997.
- Try the FastPeopleSearch route. DuckDuckGo’s guide says removing a listing from FastPeopleSearch also removes it from related sites including PeopleFinders. Our FastPeopleSearch guide takes five minutes, then check PeopleFinders again.
Keep the list moving
PeopleFinders is one stop. See the full US broker list, and run a free email exposure check to see what’s leaked in breaches too.
