TL;DR: ANZ NZ has posted eight scam alerts in 2026. The newest (September) describe fake direct-debit emails that give you a "support" number, texts from numbers ANZ has used before with links to fake login pages, and callers posing as the ANZ Fraud team who ask for codes, remote access, "safe account" transfers or even your card and PIN in an envelope for a courier. Real Caller Check only appears in the goMoney app. ANZ will never ask for your OnlineCode, Visa Secure code, PIN or password, and never asks for remote access. Call 0800 269 296 (overseas +64 4 470 3142).

September 2026: staff impersonation, three ways

According to ANZ’s September alert, scammers pose as ANZ staff by email, text and phone:

ChannelHow it works
EmailSays a direct debit has been set up on your account and gives a phone number. The number plays an automated recording, then connects you to a scammer posing as ANZ. Other emails copy real ANZ emails with the links swapped for fake ones.
TextOften arrives from a number ANZ has used before, urging you to click a link to "verify" your account or respond to suspected fraud. The link goes to a fake login page.
PhoneCallers claim to be the ANZ Fraud team and may already know some of your details.

What they ask for

The recorded message is a clever touch: it makes a scam line sound like a real call centre. A real bank number on a real ANZ statement doesn’t need one.

July 2026: the fake Caller Check

From ANZ: scammers cold call pretending to be ANZ and send fake "security verification" messages by email, SMS or WhatsApp, claiming that’s how Caller Check works.

Real Caller Check is a secure notification only in the ANZ goMoney app. ANZ never sends it by email, SMS, WhatsApp or other messaging. "If you receive one anywhere other than goMoney, it’s a scam." The security feature became the costume. Clever, but beatable once you know where the real one lives. More in our guide to Caller Check scams.

What ANZ will never do

ANZ says its fraud team may call to check unusual transactions, "however we will never ask you for remote access."

The bigger picture

Bank impersonation is growing across NZ. In October 2026, ASB cited Netsafe data showing 34% of August 2026 impersonation reports involved someone posing as a bank or financial institution, up from 20% between April and July. ASB also warned about scammers asking people to key in a code that turns on call forwarding; see our ASB alerts.
