TL;DR: Lifting a credit freeze is free, and bureaus must do it within one hour when you ask online or by phone (mail takes up to three business days). Log in to each bureau, choose a temporary lift for set dates, and the freeze returns on its own afterwards. Ask the lender which bureau it checks so you only thaw what’s needed. TransUnion lets you schedule a lift up to 15 days ahead. Lost an old PIN? Experian says you no longer need one: manage the freeze through an online account. Smaller bureaus such as ChexSystems and NCTUE are separate, and NCTUE can take up to three business days.
Why "temporary lift" is the right choice
Freezing your credit is one of the best free protections against identity theft (here’s how to set one up). But you’ll need to open it for a mortgage, car loan, new card, apartment application or some phone contracts.
You have two choices:
- Temporary lift (Experian calls it a thaw): opens your file for a date range, then refreezes automatically.
- Permanent removal: stays open until you freeze again.
Pick the temporary lift. A permanent removal relies on you remembering to refreeze, and most of us won’t.
The rules, briefly
According to Credit Karma’s guide and the FTC:
- freezing and unfreezing is free under federal law;
- requests online or by phone must be honoured within one hour, and often take minutes;
- mail requests have three business days from receipt;
- each bureau is separate, so a lift at one doesn’t touch the others;
- when a temporary lift ends, the freeze comes back automatically.
Bureau by bureau
| Bureau | How to lift | Phone | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equifax | myEquifax account online, phone or mail | 1-888-298-0045 | Mail needs Equifax’s Security Freeze Request form |
| Experian | Freeze Center online, phone or mail | 1-888-397-3742 | Schedule a thaw for set dates, or remove the freeze |
| TransUnion | Online account, automated phone line, a representative, or mail | 1-888-909-8872 (automated), 1-800-916-8800 (representative) | Schedule a lift up to 15 days in advance; online only works if you froze online |
Mail addresses: Equifax Information Services LLC, P.O. Box 105788, Atlanta, GA 30348-5788 · Experian Security Freeze, P.O. Box 9554, Allen, TX 75013 · TransUnion, P.O. Box 160, Woodlyn, PA 19094.
What you’ll be asked for
Credit Karma says online account holders are verified when they log in. Otherwise expect to give your name, address, date of birth and Social Security number. Mail requests need supporting documents such as a driver’s license, Social Security card or utility bill.
Only thaw what the lender checks
Ask the lender, landlord or carrier which bureau they pull. Many use just one or two. If they don’t know, lifting all three for a short window is fine, but a one-bureau lift keeps the other two locked. It’s like opening one door for a guest instead of taking the whole house off its hinges.
Pick sensible dates
| Applying for | Suggested lift | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card or store card | 2 to 3 days | Usually a single, instant check |
| Phone contract | 2 to 3 days | Check if the carrier uses NCTUE too (below) |
| Car loan | About a week | Dealers sometimes shop several lenders |
| Apartment rental | About a week | Landlords and screening firms vary |
| Mortgage | Ask your loan officer | Underwriting can pull again near closing |
Give yourself a day of buffer before the application. Some lifts are instant; you don’t want to find out at the counter that yours isn’t.
Don’t forget the smaller bureaus
If you also froze specialty files, they lift separately and may be slower:
- NCTUE (used by many phone, pay-TV and utility companies) warns a temporary lift can take up to three business days, and requests may not work outside business hours, according to Experian. You’ll need the PIN from your freeze confirmation page.
- ChexSystems (used by banks for new accounts) needs your ChexSystems PIN. Log in, choose Security Freeze, then Manage Freeze.

"I lost my freeze PIN"
If you froze your credit years ago, you may have been given a PIN. The big bureaus have mostly moved to online accounts. Experian says you no longer need a PIN: create or log in to an account in its Security Freeze Center and manage the freeze there. For Equifax and TransUnion, set up an online account with the same personal details, or call the numbers above and verify your identity. Expect questions about past addresses and loans.
"The lender says my file is still frozen"
- Check you lifted the right bureau.
- Check the dates, including time zones; a lift scheduled for tomorrow isn’t active today.
- Ask whether the lender also checks a specialty bureau such as ChexSystems or NCTUE.
- If it’s been over an hour since an online or phone request, call the bureau.
Don’t confuse freezes with locks
Credit locks are bureau products, sometimes paid, with app toggles. Freezes are a legal right with guaranteed timelines. Our guide to lock vs freeze explains why we prefer the freeze. If you’re freezing because of a breach, see what else leaked with a free email exposure check.
