The figures

According to the Payment Systems Regulator, in Q1 2026 firms reimbursed £72.6 million, covering 89% of the value of reimbursable claims, across about 58,400 reimbursable claims. Over the 12 months from April 2025 to March 2026, a total of £249.6 million was reimbursed. 82% of claims were resolved within five business days and 98% within 35 business days.

Across the 18 months from October 2024 to March 2026, the PSR reports 88% of money lost to APP scams returned to victims, from 438,300 reported claims, of which 301,500 were in scope. 3% were rejected for insufficient consumer caution.

What an APP scam is

An authorised push payment scam is one in which a victim is manipulated into sending a payment themselves, for example to a fake 'safe account' or a fake investment. Because the victim authorises the payment, such losses were once hard to recover. Under the reimbursement rules, which Crowdfund Insider says began in October 2024 for Faster Payments, firms now reimburse eligible claims.

Does it work?

A PSR evaluation published in July 2026, reported by Crowdfund Insider, estimated that APP fraud losses fell by about £73 million a year after the policy began.
