TL;DR: Each service has a remote sign-out: Google under Security, Your devices, Manage all devices; Facebook and Instagram in Accounts Center under Password and security, Where you're logged in; Netflix under Account, Sign out of all devices; Spotify on your account overview page, Sign out everywhere. Change the password first if you suspect someone else is in, or they can simply sign back in.
First: change the password if someone else might be in
Signing out removes sessions, but if an intruder knows your password they can log straight back in. If you're doing this because of strange activity, change the password first (to one you haven't used anywhere else), turn on two-factor authentication, then sign out everywhere. If you're only cleaning up old devices, you can skip the password change.
Google and Gmail
From Google's help page:
- Go to myaccount.google.com and open Security & sign-in.
- Under Your devices, choose Manage all devices.
- Select each device and choose Sign out.
Google warns that one device can show up as several sessions with the same name, so sign out of all of them. "Last active" times can include background syncing, and locations are approximate. Signing out of Google also signs you out of Gmail, YouTube and other Google apps on that device. If a device you don't recognise is listed, follow our guide to removing an unknown device from your Google account and then check which apps can access your Google account.
Facebook and Instagram
Both now use Meta's Accounts Center:
- Open Accounts Center from Facebook or Instagram settings.
- Go to Password and security, then Where you're logged in.
- Pick the account, select the devices you want to remove (or all of them) and tap Log out.
Digital Citizen notes that changing your password in Accounts Center also logs out other sessions. If the account was already taken over, use our Instagram recovery guide or Facebook recovery steps.
Netflix
- In a web browser, sign in, click your profile icon, then Account.
- Choose Sign out of all devices and confirm.
According to Hongkiat's walkthrough, the Android app has the same option under Account, but on iPhone and iPad you'll need to use a browser. Every TV and phone, including yours, will need to sign in again.
Spotify
Change your password, then go to your account overview at spotify.com in a browser and click Sign out everywhere, as Spotify's community team advises. Then check your profile for playlists or follows you didn't make, and remove any connected apps you don't use.
Other accounts worth doing
- Apple ID: see removing an unknown device from your Apple ID.
- Microsoft: check sign-in activity and devices; our hacked Microsoft account guide covers the steps.
- WhatsApp and Telegram: check Linked devices and Active sessions in settings.
- Gaming and streaming: Steam, PlayStation and others are covered in hacked gaming and streaming accounts.
When to do a full sign-out
- After a breach notice from that service, or a "new sign-in" alert you don't recognise. Our guide on spotting a sign-in from a new device explains what those alerts mean.
- After losing a phone or selling a laptop.
- After a breakup, or when you've shared logins with someone you no longer trust.
- After using a hotel TV, library computer or a friend's console.
Unknown sign-ins usually trace back to a password that leaked in a breach. A free email exposure check shows which breaches your email appears in, so you know which passwords to change.
