Paid a Fake Job 'Registration Fee'? Here's Your Recovery Playbook
TL;DR: Job scams that ask for an upfront 'registration,' 'training,' or 'security deposit' fee are treated as standard financial fraud for recovery purposes — report through 1930 immediately — but also check whether the resume or ID details you submitted during the fake application are now exposed.

Job scams follow a predictable arc: a message or call offering unusually easy pay (data entry, "part-time reviews," WFH roles), followed by a request for a small upfront fee to "confirm" your spot, training material, or a security deposit for equipment. If you've paid it, here's what to do.
Report the payment immediately
This is standard financial fraud recovery — call 1930 right away and follow the steps in the Golden Hour guide. If you paid via UPI, also open the parallel dispute described in UPI Fraud Recovery.
Don't pay a second "fee" to unlock the first
A common follow-up tactic is a message claiming your payment or "task earnings" are stuck and require a further "processing," "tax," or "unlock" fee to release. This is very rarely genuine — legitimate employers and platforms don't ask candidates to pay to receive their own money.
Check what you shared during the "application"
Fake job listings often collect more than a fee — many ask for a resume, Aadhaar or PAN copy, bank details for "salary setup," or a selfie for "verification" before the payment stage. If you submitted any of these:
- Follow the Aadhaar/PAN lockdown steps in You Shared Your Aadhaar or PAN With a Scammer if applicable.
- Watch your bank account for small "test" transactions in the days after — a common precursor to a larger unauthorized attempt.
- Change your email and job-portal account passwords if you applied through a platform where a fake recruiter contacted you.
Report the listing itself
If the offer came through a job portal (Naukri, LinkedIn, Indeed) or a WhatsApp/Telegram group, report the listing or account directly to the platform in addition to your cybercrime complaint — this helps get it taken down before it reaches more candidates.
Staying safer on the next job search
Legitimate employers don't ask candidates to pay for training, equipment, or "registration" before a role starts. If you're actively job hunting and want to know what a recruiter or scammer could already find about you from public sources, a Scan My Shadow check shows what's tied to your number and email. If you're specifically job hunting abroad, see what international recruiters can find about you online.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal for a real job to ask for a registration fee?
No. Legitimate employers in India do not charge candidates a fee to register, train, or receive equipment before a role begins — any such request is a strong fraud signal.
I already paid — can I get it back?
Report through 1930 immediately using the same fund-freeze process as any UPI or bank transfer fraud. Recovery odds depend heavily on how quickly it's reported.
Someone is now asking for a second fee to 'release' my payment — should I pay it?
No. This is a follow-up scam tactic, not a genuine step in recovering your money. Report it as part of the same complaint instead.
I shared my Aadhaar for the fake job — what now?
Lock your Aadhaar biometrics through UIDAI and monitor your credit report and any new SIM registrations under your name over the following weeks.
How do I spot a fake job listing before applying?
Be cautious of unusually high pay for minimal work, requests for upfront payment of any kind, and recruiters who avoid phone or video calls and push everything through chat apps.
This is one part of a bigger playbook — see the complete India recovery guide for other scam types and next steps.
