Because LinkedIn feels professional rather than social, people tend to apply less scrutiny to their privacy settings there than they would on other platforms. That's exactly why it's worth a closer look — the platform is built around visibility by default.

What's public by default on most LinkedIn profiles

• Full employment history including exact dates, which can reveal employment gaps or short tenures that a candidate might prefer to summarize differently.
• Your full connections list, unless specifically restricted — meaning anyone can see exactly who you know professionally.
• Skills endorsements and recommendations, tied to the specific people who gave them, revealing relationship context beyond just the job history itself.
• Activity — likes, comments, and shares — often visible to your full network or even publicly, depending on your settings.

The "who viewed your profile" feature cuts both ways

LinkedIn shows you (in a limited or full form, depending on account tier) who's viewed your profile — and by default, your own visits show up to others too. This means casually checking out a company page or a potential employer's profile can tip your hand that you're job hunting, unless you've adjusted your browsing privacy mode first.

LinkedIn scraping: can people copy your profile?

Yes, and they do. Scrapers are tools that copy public profile data in bulk to build sales lists and people-search databases. LinkedIn bans it in its user agreement, and courts have backed that: in the long-running hiQ Labs case, a federal court ruled in November 2022 that LinkedIn's anti-scraping terms were enforceable, and hiQ agreed to a $500,000 judgment and to stop scraping and destroy the data, as Privacy World reported. That doesn't stop scrapers who ignore the rules.

To limit what can be scraped, per Incogni:

• Settings & Privacy, Visibility, Edit your public profile: switch your profile's public visibility off, so people who aren't signed in see much less.
• Settings, Data privacy: switch off social, economic and workplace research.
• Leave your email and phone off the visible profile.
