For a huge number of small shop owners in India, there's no separation between the business number and the personal one — it's the same SIM, used to take orders, talk to family, and receive banking OTPs, all at once. That's convenient, and it's also a permanent public listing of a number that touches everything else.

Where the number ends up being public

• Google My Business listings display the phone number to anyone who searches the shop's name or location, indefinitely.
• Justdial and similar directories often list numbers pulled from public sources, sometimes without the owner ever having actively submitted them.
• WhatsApp Business profiles, when linked to a public catalog or shared widely, expose the number to anyone who has the link, not just confirmed customers.

The risk this creates beyond spam calls

• A number confirmed as active and business-facing becomes a more convincing target for social engineering — fake supplier calls, fraudulent “order confirmation” scams, and similar attempts.

A more separated setup

• Use a dedicated business number wherever possible — a second SIM or a virtual business number, kept entirely separate from personal banking and messaging.
• On WhatsApp Business specifically, review what's visible in the public profile — status updates and “about” text can be more exposed than expected.
• Periodically check what Justdial and similar directories have listed, since numbers can appear there without an active submission.
