Before you leave: lock down what's staying behind

• Update or freeze credit reports. US credit bureaus keep reporting on accounts you still hold even after you've left the country — a security freeze prevents new accounts being opened in your name while you're not around to notice.
• Check people-search sites. Sites like Whitepages and Spokeo often list a "last known address" that stays visible even after you move. It's worth requesting removal before you go, since it's harder to manage from abroad.
• Review old account security. Bank, email, and social accounts tied to a US phone number can lock you out entirely once that number is disconnected. Add backup verification methods first.

After you land: what changes automatically (and what doesn't)
